Why a bamboo stroller?

Almost every stroller is aluminium and plastic. We chose bamboo. Here is why that is smarter than it sounds.

Walk into any baby store and you see the same thing everywhere: aluminium frames, plastic hinges, plastic wheels. Understandable, because it is cheap and light. But there is a material that is lighter, stronger and far more sustainable. It grows in a few months and never needs to end up in an incinerator like plastic: bamboo.

Stronger than you think

Technically bamboo is a grass, yet its tensile strength is higher than that of many types of steel. That is why scaffolding, bridges and houses have been built from it in Asia for centuries. For the Panda we use laminated bamboo: thin layers glued crosswise, so the frame is equally strong in every direction and cannot split.

A raw material that replenishes itself

A bamboo plant grows up to a metre a day and is ready to harvest after three to five years. Harvesting does not kill the plant; it simply sprouts again. Along the way bamboo absorbs up to 35 percent more CO2 than a comparable forest. Aluminium, by contrast, has one of the most energy-intensive production processes of all metals.

No plastic, not even at the end

The biggest difference only shows after years. A plastic stroller ends up as residual waste. A bamboo frame can be refurbished, passed on or composted. The Panda's fabrics are removable and washable, so the stroller lasts through several children.

What does bamboo feel like?

Warm. That is the first thing parents say when they pick up the Panda. Bamboo does not get cold in winter or hot in the sun, and it develops a beautiful sheen over the years. Want to feel it yourself? See the Where to buy page for the store nearest to you.
